During my research this week, I spotted a couple of great community organising/volunteering opportunities with upcoming deadlines. So Iβve decided to do something a bit different this issue and highlight these at the top of the newsletter. Let me know if this is a useful feature and something youβd like to see more of in future!
π Get Involved
π Book Week Scotland is offering up to Β£500 to support a community-led event with a bestselling author - either Jackie Kay or Johanna Basford. You can really let your imagination run wild with this one - theyβre looking for unusual and creative takes on book events. Find out more and get your application in here (deadline Friday 20th September).
πΆ Thereβs still time to volunteer for Dunbar Music Festival (27-29 September). Fill in this short form before Saturday 14 September to register your interest. Want to perform? You can sign up for a busking slot here.
π§° East Linton Tool Library are working with secondary schools across East Lothian to run free βAgainst Fast Fashionβ repair workshops. To find out more, please email Rosie: fixingforafuture@gmail.com
π Got an opportunity youβd like to share in The East Lothian Current? Let me know here.
Whatβs On
π§ Tickets are going fast for this Printmaking Workshop at Spott Village Hall on Saturday 28th September. A Β£10 donation is suggested, and youβll get a (perfectly printed) tote bag to take away with you.
πΏ Another one to book asap - Wilding, based on the bestselling book by Isabella Tree, is showing at Pix in the Stix on Saturday 21st September. Save your spot here.
ποΈ National Theatre Lives are always excellent, but you wonβt want to miss Jodie Comer in βPrima Facieβ later this month. Want something a bit less heavy? Andrew Scott in βPresent Laughterβ is lined up for the week after. Worth noting that both of these will be shown at the Loretto School theatre (apparently v lovely), not Haddington Corn Exchange.
πͺ© This one looks super fun - catch Rita Riot - A Drag Show Like No Other at Stenton Village Hall. Itβs BYOB, and donβt forget your cash for βballs out bingoβ.
π· Want to get merry AND do a good deed? This wine tasting event is raising funds for the Scottish Refugee Council (they give support and advice to refugees living in Scotland). Youβll taste eight different wines and enjoy a light supper of bread and cheese - suggested donation is Β£25 per person.
Talk of the Town
π If youβre a regular Lothian Bus user, itβs worth reminding yourself of the route changes and revisions that came into effect this week.
ποΈ This isnβt related to East Lothian, but I wanted to share this article on how Substack is transforming local news, which sums up some of what Iβm trying to do with this newsletter. Itβs also a well-deserved bit of promo for Michael MacLeod, creator of The Edinburgh Minute, who has been a great supporter of The Current since we launched in May.
