East Lothian Current: 🌊 19th June 2024
Independent Bookshop Week, North Berwick Witch Trials and Climate Action
As well as Pride Month, we’re also right in the middle of Independent Bookshop Week, so I wanted to use the opportunity to promote some favourite local books and bookshops this week. Want to recommend something? Let me know here!
I also want to say a special hello and thank you to new subscribers this week - I suspect most of you have come from always-excellent The Edinburgh Minute (if not, take a look, it’s well worth your time).

☀️ To Do: Find your next summer read at Night Owl Books in East Linton. I’ve shared their events before, but the shop itself is well worth a visit. You’ll find all the latest bestsellers, nestled side by side with works in translation and writing from local East Lothian authors. There’s a small-but-perfectly-formed children’s section for little bookworms too.
📚 To Read: Speaking of local, I’ve just started The Kings Witches by Kate Foster, which is partly set in North Berwick at the time of the North Berwick Witch Trials.
🥐 To Potter: Dunbar Food and Craft Market is back in Lauderdale Park this Sunday - you’ll find over 30 stalls with tasty treats and locally made crafts.
🏳️🌈 To Celebrate: This Saturday is Edinburgh Pride - you can find the march route here, and festival info here. This article (featuring a young Ian McKellen!) is a good reminder of why visibility and pride are so important.
💚 To Take Action: East Lothian Climate Hub are hosting an open event on the future of sustainability and climate action in East Lothian - what that looks like, and how we can work together to create change. It’s open to all - the organisers say “you don’t need to be an expert on climate change, you just need to care about how it affects you and your community.”
