The Current: 🌊 8th May 2024
National Walking Month, Sri Lankan delights and plans for a sunny Saturday
Firstly, an enormous THANK YOU to all the support you’ve shown this newsletter - I’ve been absolutely blown away by the response!
If you’re enjoying The Current so far, please share it far and wide - it’s the best way to grow our audience and reach as many people as possible in East Lothian and beyond.
What’s On
🌼 To Go: May is National Walking Month - celebrate the (late) arrival of Spring sunshine by exploring one of these East Lothian trails. (Top tip: if you do the Gullane Circular, make a pitstop at Goose on the Green for one of their unbelievably good scones)
🍛 To Eat: Steampunk are hosting another of Sri Lankan Delights’ popular supper clubs on Thursday 23rd May - expect a set menu of delicious, fresh and 100% plant based Sri Lankan dishes. You’ll need to book in advance - email srilankandelights@tutanota.com.
🗓️ To Book: Thinking of getting into mushrooms this summer? For foraging and safe identification, your first stop should be this author talk with mycologist Neville Kilkenny on Sunday 26th May. It’s part of Haddstock and hosted by Night Owl Books - you’ll be an expert in no time 🍄🟫.
🪩 To Dance: Head to Newhailes House this Saturday for Festhailes 2024 - expect Abba and Steps tribute bands, with food trucks and a prosecco bar to keep you going. It’s forecast sun so don’t forget your SPF!*
🛠️ To Fix It: Dig out that wonky stool and those blunt scissors and visit the East Linton Repair Cafe in the Community Hall this Saturday. Expert volunteers will be on hand to help with textile repairs, bikes, small household electricals. Just email fixingforafuture@gmail.com and let them know what you’re bringing.
(*sun not guaranteed, best to pack your waterproofs too)
Talk of the Town
🚂 ScotRail have announced their new timetable changes, including a new commuter service from Prestonpans, and additional carriages on North Berwick trains over the weekend. Some people (me) would say that feels like a missed opportunity to increase the number of services stopping at the new station in East Linton…
📺 Volunteers from Dunbar’s RNLI crew featured on BBC 2’s Saving Lives at Sea last night, orchestrating the dramatic rescue of a youngster who fell from the rocks at Dunbar Harbour last year. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution marks 200 years of service this year - find out more about the incredible work they do here.
